We recently joined Carly, Josh and Luna for a fun-filled week on Washington‘s Whidbey Island. The fun got started when Budget offered to upgrade us from an economy car to a Mustang convertible – obviously! It made taking the car ferry over from the mainland so much more fun, not mention simply driving around the island. We had an incredible house in Oak Harbor that overlooked the waters of the sound and that had visits from bald eagles every afternoon.

A few special highlights from the trip — our day whale-watching out of Anacortes, where we saw orcas, more orcas, and even more orcas; loganberry pie from Whidbey Pies and loganberry liqueur from Whidbey Island Distillery; wine and chocolate tasting in Langley; driving around in the cool fog listening to the new Tame Impala album, over and over; and hiking on, under, and around the Deception Pass bridge.

Our silliest and most fun adventure of the trip though was by far clamming in Penn Cove. The five of us sweet-talked some tips out of some locals and then started digging wherever we saw the tell-tale spurt of a clam’s siphon. Digging with a shovel in one particular spot is definitely most effective, but Kristan decided she preferred digging with her own hands. Did she find many clams? Not really, and she trashed her hands, but it was totally worth it!
