Wrapping up our travel recap with this bonus blog post, because we just had too many photos to share! Check out the first installment here.
We finished our trip with some city time in Stockholm and Copenhagen. We arrived in Stockholm having taken another rapid train back from Norrköping. Tycho still wasn’t sure if he liked the quick train but that’s how the schedule worked out! We checked into our cool hotel again and immediately needed a fika. It turns out the closest option was in the Kulturhuset right around the corner! Not our best but Nova got a chokladboll, we had a great view of Sergels torg, and we discovered a really cool art gallery on the same floor that had giant groceries for playing?! The kids had a blast and it was one of the best single hours we spent on the whole trip. (Sadly we somehow managed to never do fika right in Stockholm, which was just a bummer! Always too late, wrong place, etc.) We went to a cafe in the park for dinner while the kids ran around, it was super casual and definitely touristy, but it made us happy and that’s what matters :)
We spent the rest of our time in Stockholm largely either in museums or looking for Kknekki hair ties (or both!). We did the Moderna Museet, ArkDes, the Vasa Museet, and the Viking Museum, while being mindful of rain and somehow failing to get out of city center. Our biggest struggle and greatest success was finding a place to watch the World Cup final – after being turned away from one place in London, we were so worried about being able to bring the kids. We had a watch party in mind that was advertised as family-friendly a couple neighborhoods away, but just as we were about to leave we realized the restaurant across the plaza from our hotel was setting up an outdoor screen! We managed to squeeze in without a reservation and when Nova was too tired to do extra time at 11pm we were in our hotel room within 2 minutes. Tycho was happy (but also sad because the World Cup was over after 6 weeks of fun).
Copenhagen was an easy flight and a quick transit ride to our apartment in central Copenhagen. We were right next to the pedestrian-only area which felt so nice! The kids just LIT UP when they saw Carly, Josh and Luna at dinner our first night, it was the best. Plus we had ice cream with exciting flavors like sea buckthorn and then went to the playground by the palace, so we couldn’t have asked for a better start. And then the next day we did Lego Copenhagen and exploring and went to the jazz concert on the harbor. A sunny afternoon, a bar selling spritzes, and a place to put our feet in the water, what else could you ask for? (Nova was annoyed we didn’t have her swimsuit so she could jump in, truly we have created a monster). Max and I got to have a fun date night and got biked over to Reffen, the shipping container street food market. We just missed the harbor bus back – next time!
Alas we woke up to rain on our Tivoli day and pivoted to the design museum… which did not go down well with Tycho. We ended up heading over in the afternoon anyway, figuring we would make it work and we did! One brief rainstorm but we got ahead of it and had early dinner at the brewery inside the park. The kids had a blast of course and we literally closed down the park. Time for an easy day so we ran up the spiral of the Round Tower and chilled at the library before renting a boat and going around the harbor with Carly, Josh and Luna. Right next door to the boats were the Islands Brygge harbor baths, with an amazing staired structure for leaping off of into the water. Nova was so excited to do it over and over again!
We ended the trip on a high note by taking the regional train 45 minutes north to the Louisiana Art Museum. A friend of ours had strongly recommended it and it was super fun to have a small adventure to a truly beautiful place. The museum’s mid-century, indoor-outdoor architecture was a worthy piece in its own right, with a beautiful view of the sea and a children’s wing to boot. Definitely one of the best museums we’ve ever been to, and even the kids loved it. Plus, it was just right for a visit with Klaus, an old family friend who lives not too far from the museum. We had a fun lunch with Klaus at the cafe (the food was great though we did order too much) and then ended the day with a walk out on the museum’s dock, where Nova – of course – put on her swimsuit and jumped off into the sea.
