Every November we do a fun, seasonal craft with Tycho and Nova called the “Thankful Turkey”. We try to talk about what we’re thankful for every night, and the kids add one or two “feathers” to the turkey with a highlight. I love to see what the kids suggest every year, and how it changes as they get older. One of Nova’s this year was “Stuffie Store”, a game she played with Tycho and Daddy, and Tycho’s unsurprisingly included “bikes” and “books” – he got a new bike this month, and he spent most of his free time reading on the couch!
We are also grateful for friends, parks, libraries, playgrounds… all the things that make such a difference in our lives in San Francisco. It didn’t make it on the Turkey this year, but thinking back over the month I am grateful for the kids’ swim lessons and their wonderful teachers there. Nova got her “red ribbon”, for safety skills, just before we went to Kauai which completely changed the tone of the trip. We spent so much time in the pool and the ocean! I felt like I could still feel the chlorine in my nose a week after we got home. I’m also so grateful for Hawaii! It is a special place for our family, and we’re so lucky to get to go as often as we do.
Lastly we are thankful for family. Gail and Darryl came to visit for “Grandparents and Special Friends Day” at Tycho’s school, and let Max and I escape on a belated tenth wedding anniversary trip to Big Sur for a couple of nights. The kids had so much fun with GG and Papa D, and we realized that we’re ten years older and that reliving the hike we got engaged on isn’t quite as fun as reading in silence while looking at the ocean, together. (Ah, parenthood.) Then on our trip to Kauai, Aunt Brittany and Uncle Sean came over from the Big Island for two nights for lots of time with the kids. Tycho taught them spades, and we had such a great time hanging out!
