September is such a wonderful month in SF! The weather is beautiful and there are so many fun things to do. Nova had her first day of TK (transitional kindergarten) in the forest, which means a little more structure and a lot longer hikes. This year her birthday was the second day of school and she was so excited to bring all of her friends raisins to celebrate! (See her Winnie-the-Pooh-esque bag below, “RAIZINZ FOR BIRTHDAY”). It was a big exciting day of presents and cake and happy times – she even somehow found the energy for a bike ride in the park. Tycho was so eager to help wrap and get everything nicely arranged for the morning, it was sweet. She asked to have a rainbow party at the “red playground” and she and all her friends had so much fun on the play structure and climbing trees that we didn’t even do the activities we had brought with us! I love seeing her joy in spending time with her friends in the park.

And then it was Flower Piano! 10 days of musical magic in the botanical gardens. Hanging out, running into friends and neighbors and schoolmates, and listening to all the music in one of the most peaceful corners of SF is just the best. I wish everyone could visit SF in September just for this.

Somehow over the summer Tycho became a baseball wonk and so we went to not one but two Giants games this month. We still haven’t figured out exactly where we like to sit but popcorn and peanuts and veggie dogs and pizza and beer are really all we need. One night it was even warm enough we didn’t wear jackets. Alas, the Giants didn’t make the playoffs but it was so cute watching Tycho “check the standings” every morning in hopes of an Orange October.

Wrapping the month up was our nearly 12 hour epic block party. It’s a massive group planning effort and this year we went all out for its 10th anniversary: petting zoo, bounce house, tie dye, crafts, face paint, “lawn” games, donuts and coffee, bbq lunch, happy hour with pizza, ice cream, movie! Someone even set up a pickleball net at some point, and I think there might have been water balloons?! At this point most of the neighbor kids are old enough that we can supervise collectively without a lot of parental interference and I’m so grateful they get to have a wild day of fun more or less independently. We started cleaning the street at 9am and the party kept going til 8pm.. though our kids were wiped by 6:30pm and we went home to watch some Bluey before we all fell into our beds. Yay for our wonderful neighbors and yay for wonderful SF!
